Drone Flying

If you wish to fly a drone in the area, please read the following:

Dependant on the area you wish to fly and what you wish to do, you may need to contact Brize Norton RAF and Oxford Airport Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the beginning of the day.

They will ask for:

  • Name
  • Flyer/operator ID
  • Location of flight
  • Contact number
  • Flying height
  • Type of activity
  • Window of operation

Please plan in advance of your proposed date of flight to allow time to assess your request. Please ensure you have all the landowner and land users consents, the University Estate may be tenanted.

In summary:

1. You will be trained and registered.
2. You will be insured.
3. You will have a risk assessment of proposed flight.
4. You will agree to University of Oxford Policies on drones, data collection, and intellectual property.
5. You will collaborate with a Whatsapp Group to co-ordinate airspace activities.
6. You have land users and land owners permission.

Please provide information on points 1-3 and state you have ‘read and agreed’ to point 4. Dependant on your frequency, it will be recommended you join the Whatsapp chat group to coordinate activities (5.). External organisations doing single surveys can liaise with us at: oge@admin.ox.ac.uk.

We also have a drone zone map of the Woods and linked farms. Please submit your drone flight requests along with your risk assessments, flight plans and confirmation of insurance to: OGE@admin.ox.ac.uk. Permission to fly is not given until written consent has been provided.
