Zebra spider (Salticus scenicus)

The zebra spider is a distinctive black-and-white striped spider indigenous to the Northern Hemisphere. It is part of a group of jumping spiders that includes several other similar species in the UK. These spiders prefer upright habitats, like walls, rocks, and tree trunks. They also like to have plenty of sunlight. These spiders stalk and then leap on their prey and can jump up to 10cm, which is over 14 times their own body length. That’s like a 6 foot human being able to jump 84 feet! Male zebra spiders attract females through a complex dance that involves moving around the female with their legs waving in the air.
